I was excited to hear about the plans to create a sculpture garden at 9th and Frederica Street. I submitted several designs that I felt would be appropriate for the space. Since this small park is in a highly visible location I suggested that I carve an abstract limestone sculpture at the park during my up coming sabbatical and encourage the community to get involved in its creation.
With the help of Kentucky Wesleyan College I will move a 5000 pound block of stone to the site. Then between January and May I will carve this stone.
Local media coverage will be used to encourage the community to come by and enter into a dialog with the Artist. The Museum of Fine Art will seek schools and organizations that are interested in learning more about the creative process to come by and watch me work. We will begin a weekly photo update and a discussion page found on this web site so the community can watch the evolution of this piece of sculpture.
I believe that art will be less intimidating to people if they have the opportunity to interact with the artist. As they watch the sculpture take shape they will begin to understand the value art has to the community and take some ownership in it.
With this new page on my website the process has begun. I hope we will all have a positive experience from it.
